Successful Protocols for Integrating Body Acupuncture and Ear Acupuncture for Pain Relief - Tom Corbin
For the past 12 years an acupuncture program has operated at the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Hospital. Born of a desire to decrease opiate medication use in the Chronic-Pain Program, the acupuncture component borrows heavily from auricular microsystem style therapy. Micro-acupuncture is the expression of the entire body in each gross anatomical part. In all Microsystems, the topology of the acupoints reiterates the anatomy of the body as a kind of holographic echo.
The morning’s session will explore the most effective protocols in ear/body acupuncture to treat chronic-pain diagnosed patients. It will also serve as an introduction and primer for acupuncture programs in western healthcare settings. The session will conclude with the outcome research findings that produced the first program of its kind in the Veterans' healthcare system.

Acutonics® Harmonic Euphoria — Creating a Balanced Life (Part 1) - Donna Carey & Ellen Franklin
Euphoria: A feeling of great joy, comfort, security, and inner harmony. When the inner is harmonious the outer will follow.
This workshop demonstrates the use of sound vibration on specific acupuncture points to promote euphoria, a sense of comfort, balance, joy, security and inner harmony to sustain you and your practice. Through our exploration of the impact of sound vibration on human physiology, psychology and behaviour, you will gain experience in an innovative adjunct therapy that reduces stress and harmonizes the entire physical system.
11:00 am
I Ching Acupuncture (Part 1) - David Twicken
Learn about I Ching Acupuncture, The Balance Method, one of the most clinically effective systems of acupuncture. Based on the principles and theories of the I Ching and Nei Jing, this method contains the essence of acupuncture presented in the Nei Jing.
Learn about the central theories in these two texts and how they have become the basis of practicing acupuncture in both ancient and modern times. I Ching Acupuncture, The Balance Method was created by Dr. Chao Chen and brought to North America in the early 1980s. It has become a popular and clinically effective method of acupuncture with many practitioners around the world utilizing his system, including Dr. Richard Tan.
You will learn about the Ba Gua and how it contains the essential principles to guide you in selecting effective acupuncture treatments. I Ching Acupuncture, The Balance Method contains the central principle and application of the Su Wen and Ling Shu, the profound clinical effects of minimal point selection.

Session 1
Auricular Acupuncture in Chronic Pain Patients - Tom Corbin
The most effective treatment protocols developed over the 12 years of the Veterans Chronic Pain Program will be shown. Through research and treatment, Dr. Corbin has been able to clearly define the exact auricular point locations in typical pain presentations. The location of points related to the lower limbs and vertebrae will be shown, and treatment practiced using simple tools to assist the acupuncturist.
Following mapping of the exact point locations, the concept of Nogier’s radii points will be shown. This will enable therapists not using electrical point finders to have the greatest chance of obtaining optimal pain relief through exact needle placement. Next, the most common pain presentations, their auricular localization along with common referral patterns will be discussed and practiced on rubber life-like ears.
Appropriate use of seeds, magnets, metal choice and semi-permanent needles will be discussed based on over a decade of experience with common pain patients. Acupuncturists will be able to transfer this to their clinical practice quickly and effectively.
Finally, the acupuncturist will learn how to individualize treatments depending on the type of body acupuncture used as an adjunct to the auricular protocols. The growth of the novel program in a western setting should assist in developing ideas on how to author a similar program or add aspects of the program to your own practice.
Session 2
Acutonics® Harmonic Euphoria – Creating a Balanced Life – Part 2- Donna Carey, Ellen Franklin
Practical protocols for use as add-on or stand-alone treatments in your practice will be covered. Recent documented research with Acutonics has demonstrated its efficacy in promoting joy. Application of specific sound vibrations to acupuncture points re-establishes healthier rhythms. These vibrations also support entrainment, so that the body is able to return to this euphoric state in times of stress.
Through the examination of the Music of the Spheres in western and oriental medical science, history and philosophy, participants will be introduced to the use of tuning forks tuned to specific frequencies of the Earth, Moon, Sun, and Planets. We will explore the use of musical intervals, gain knowledge of correspondences, sympathetic resonant physics, and the direct application of tuning forks to specific acupuncture points, trigger points and points of pain to promote a sense of euphoria, reduce pain and anxiety, improve sleep patterns and renew vigour and optimal health.
Participants will have hands-on experience learning to work directly on the body with these tools. In addition specific research and case studies will be presented to demonstrate practical clinical applications.
Session 3
I-Ching Acupuncture – Part 2 - David Twicken
The I Ching or Book of Changes is the basis of Chinese philosophy and contains the foundation knowledge of the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, the classic medical text for acupuncture.
The legendary Dr. Chao Chen created I Ching Acupuncture in the 1970s by applying “Systems of Correspondences” to acupuncture and the I Ching, revealing an elegant and profound method of selecting acupoints. He reconstructed the ancient method of channel and point selection found in the classics.
I Ching Acupuncture workshop includes:
- History of I Ching, Eight Trigrams and Ba Gua
- Ba Gua theory - revealing the relationships between Zang Fu and Six Channels
- Anatomical Balance Points for treating areas of the body will be explained with I Ching and Nei Jing theory
- Minimal channel and point selection strategies and methods are clearly presented. One and two needle treatments will be presented for treating pain
- Learn to use I Ching Acupuncture for treating internal organ conditions and distinguish between channel and organ imbalances, a central theme in the Nei Jing
- Emphasis will be centered on clinical applications for your practice: you will be able to select effective points quickly and efficiently, with results that have been proven in the clinic by thousands of practitioners
- The I Ching Acupuncture book clearly explaining this entire system will be available for an easy learning experience during the workshop and for home study
Dr. Twicken learned I Ching Acupuncture directly from Dr. Chao Chen and his son Yu Chen, L.Ac.
