The annual Doris Sweetnam Scholarship Fund was created by Eastern Currents Distributing to assist third and fourth-year students enrolled full-time in acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine study programs.
This is the first scholarship offered in Canada to students of acupuncture and TCM. It is named in honour of Doris Sweetnam, a pioneer in the field of acupuncture and auricular medicine in Canada.
The value of this year's scholarship totals $2,295.00

Eligibility
Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, or Naturopathic students entering 3rd or 4th year (full-time) in an established /recognized school. Students from across Canada are eligible.
Terms
Students will submit either a 2,500 word essay or a 15-20 minute video/multimedia presentation on the following topic:
Modern Science has acknowledged that hierarchical, linear, deterministic strategies are not effective for studying complex living systems and ecosystems. A new scientific branch, called environmental sciences, has emerged to utilize complexity theory, chaos theory and a systems approach to exploring and understanding nature. Your paper should discuss how Chinese Medicine theory has, for over 2000 years, already been utilizing a similar approach to understanding the intricate nature of human health. In addition, the paper should also discuss the value/benefits of this “systems” approach of understanding health and how it may alleviate the escalating costs of our current medical paradigm.

Presentations will be assessed by Dr. John Stan. The winner will be contacted by March 1, 2012. The award will be presented at the Canadian Oriental Medical Symposium on March 9, 2012.
The Small Print
The student will be required, should they accept the free admission to the Canadian Oriental Medical Symposium, to make their own travel and lodging arrangements. Costs for travel and/or lodging is not covered by the scholarship. The essay or multimedia presentation will be published in the handout, or displayed, at the Canadian Oriental Medical Symposium for attendees to read or view. The scholarship recipient allows Eastern Currents the right to use his or her name, likeness and biographical information, as well as the right to use their scholarship project submission in connection with any and all Eastern Currents promotions and publicity, including the website and promotions of the Doris Sweetnam Scholarship Fund. The winning submission will also be uploaded to Eastern Currents’ website for individuals to view. The scholarship will only be granted if the applicant can prove enrollment in an acceptable full-time program of study.
