Course Type: This is a recorded seminar*
Pre-Requisites: This course has some suggested pre-requisites - see note below.

This course is a pre-requisite for Janice Walton-Hadlock's Detecting Channel Qi Abberations - Level 2, which is taking place in Vancouver, November 29-30, 2014.

Course Overview:

You can know exactly where to place acupuncture needles, and why.

Learn to detect, with your hands, the exact location of Channel Qi aberrations - the root of all mental and physical ills. Then discover specific styles of needle insertion that directly restore correct Channel flow at the point of the aberration – as opposed to hit-or-miss, hope-for-the-best treatments.

Channel Qi aberrations, classically referred to as “Channel Qi Doesn’t Go Through,” are the energetic drivers behind all health problems.

Channel Qi blockages occur in highly specific, individualized locations – and you can detect these with your hands. These blockages force the Channel Qi into aberrant patterns, which then lead to compromised health. Stubborn physical or emotional blockages are only rarely diminished by distal-point or “indicated point” treatments. But when you breach these Channel Qi obstructions by strategic needling in the exact vicinity of the blockage, instantaneous healing often ensues.

You already have an innate ability to detect Channel Qi. Develop it.

You have two options for preparing for success in this course - it is highly recommended you complete at least one of these prerequisite items prior to completing this course:

  1. Watch a 1-hour recording of Janice's Advanced Channel Theory presentation from COMS 2013. This course is available for free, or can be purchased for $22 (purchasing the course will earn you an additional CEU/PDA).
  2. Read the first 4 chapters of Tracking the Dragon, by Janice Walton-Hadlock
  3. Registrants of this course should try feeling channel Qi prior to the course so that they have a sense of their ability.
Please note that this course also serves as a prerequisite for Detecting Channel Qi Aberrations: Level 2, which is being presented in Vancouver, BC as both a Live Seminar and streamed online event from April 12-13, 2014.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn to differentiate, using hand-detection, when Channel Qi is running correctly, backwards, or stopping.

  • Learn needle insertion techniques that directly rectify Channel Qi aberrations.

  • Learn to differentiate between the normal and healthy patterns of Channel Qi flow when a person is in parasympathetic, sympathetic, sleep, or dissociated (shock) mode.

  • Anyone can learn to detect channel Qi, but it requires practice to understand what one is feeling. The demonstrations in this class will be directed at increasing confidence in recognizing the Channel Qi sensations experienced by the hands, and learning what the different sensations signify.
  • To come away with a clear sense of how to feel Channel Qi and how to develop and test a treatment plan based on the aberrations in Channel Qi; learning confidence in one's ability to assess is also a key goal in this course, and this is best achieved through practicing.

Course Outline:

Part 1:
  • The physics of Channel Qi: jing-luo, bosuns, and waves
  • The mechanics of feeling Channel Qi
    • Feeling the Stomach and Ren channels
    • Practice detecting the Stomach and Ren channels on fellow students
    • Moving the palm of the hand back and forth along the traditionally described path of the Stomach channel.
    • Practicing feeling moving (blown) air on the palm compared with “pushing” on the air
    • Practice following the path of the Stomach channel
  • Recorded Q and A from students
  • Repeat the same three practices of the previous hour – many students will notice a slight change in what they are able to detect, others will notice the changes in their legs when students impose Qi rather than detecting Qi.
  • Common diversions of the Stomach channel
    • Sympathetic mode divergences at ST-13 and Ren-12
      • Practice inducing sympathetic mode changes and detecting them
  • Practice
    • Feel the Channel Qi by moving the hand back and forth, noticing the difference between the two. New emphasis: do NOT influencing the patient’s Channel Qi while working at detection
    • Practice following the path of the Stomach channel while not influencing it
  • Recorded student volunteers with scars/history of injury on the Stomach channel
    • Practice following the Channel Qi on these students
    • A discussion of case studies involving Stomach channel aberrations
Part 2:
  • Review
    • Practice feeling channel Qi in the Stomach channel, renewed emphasis on not influencing the patient’s Channel Qi.
  • Sleep- and Dissociation-mode divergences of the Stomach channel
    • Practice inducing dissociation mode changes in each other and detecting the Channel Qi changes
  • Discussion on recognizing sympathetic- and dissociation- mode patterns in patients: case studies
    • Treatment considerations
      • Needling blocked channels
      • Energetic work on the patient’s part for unblocking channels
      • Herbs for blocked channels
  • Channel blockages formed by scar tissue and unresolved injuries
    • Channel Qi following the path of least resistance - discussion
    • Directional assessment of Channel Qi
      • Needle-direction theory for redirecting Channel Qi
  • Practice feeling Channel Qi
    • Demonstration: Practicing feeling Channel Qi on healthy students
    • Demonstration: Detecting the aberrations in students with scar tissue or unresolved injury
  • Treatment - All Demonstration:
    • Performing needling on students with scar tissue
    • Practicing feeling aberrant Channel Qi prior to needling
    • Practicing feeling the changes that occur in the Channel Qi after needling
    • Recorded patients’ assessment of changes that occurred in response to the needling

Please note:  It is highly recommended that registrants have someone on hand to practice techniques on that are demonstrated in this course.

Short Case Study of How Janice's Techniques Work:

Janice Walton Hadlock Before and After

Case Study Details:

In class, we saw a woman with a large lump on her abdomen, and she was experiencing very high levels of abdominal pain. The steadily growing lump and pain began following her second C-section, sever years ago. Her OB-GYN diagnosed her with endometriosis.

Before Photo: This photo shows the insertion of the first three needles, bisecting the C-section line, you can see the red/purple colour of the very dense lump. The skin over the lump has a hard, gravelly texture. Her menstrual periods were excruciating.

After Photo: Three weeks later, the patient sent me a photo of the lump. The pain is greatly reduced: more like a three on a scale of one to ten - down from a nine. Also, the pain is no longer constant. The lump seems, to the patient, to be a bit smaller and softer. The colour and skin texture are much healthier. Her subsequent menstrual period was much less painful. It started with dried, brown blood, and then changed to be a normal, healthy, menstrual bleeding. Curiously, her vision has also improved. She has had vision problems ever since the second C-section, and a pain that occurs in her left abdomen following any presure on the right side, Liver channel on her thigh. This cross-over pain suggests that the Liver channel is shunting from the right to the left side of her body because it cannot get past the scarring on the abdomen. Detecting the flow of the Liver channel Qi confirmed that diagnosis. After using needles to open up the blockage on her abdomen, the Liver channel still continues to cross from right to left, from habit. I used a channel re-positioning technique. the pain in the left abdomen in response to pressure on her right thigh Liver channel was instantly gone. Also, her vision instantly improved and that improvement has remained.

The channel repositioning technique will be taught in the Level 2 class.

This patient may require more treatments, but for now, since her condition continues to steadily improve, we will wait and see her position.

Once purchased, you will have 1 year to complete the CEU requirements. During this time, you must view the training and complete any required documents to get your certificate. You must also print and save your certificate during this time. As of November 2016, you now have unlimited access to the recording for the purpose of reviewing the material for as long as the course is on the EC Learning site.
