TCM Herbal Quality

Did You Know? Some Interesting TCM Herbal Facts...

  • 90% of the safety problems associated with TCM herbs are a result of the use of inauthentic herbs. A further 5% of problems are generated by toxins in some of the herbs, and the remaining 5% of problems are as a result of misdiagnosing the TCM pattern.

  • Even though tremendous effort has gone into developing cultivated herbs, currently 80-85% of herbs are still wild-crafted.  With demand high, pickers recruited for picking may not be educated or skilled at selecting the correct species of the plant, or may deliberately choose look-a-like herbs to increase their production. The herbal market is currently a true “buyer beware” market.

  • Concentrated herbal powders are increasingly become the choice of many practitioners of TCM due to their convenience. Many companies are luring practitioners with claims of “high potency” or being “super concentrated”. What many practitioners do not know is that these products can no longer be considered “Traditional” as the traditional methods used water and alcohol to extract a full spectrum of all the biomarkers of each plant. The “super” concentrates use pharmaceutical extraction methods using toxic solvents to extract only one or two the most active bio-markers within the plant. “Super Concentrate” does not always mean “better”.
