E-Learning Formats Explained

At Eastern Currents Learning it is our goal to provide you with the best learning experience possible. To do this, we focus on creating courses and events that appeal to a wide audience, covering an array of topics. We also understand that everyone learns differently, and can't be in all places at once. This is why we also aim to provide learning opportunities that are accessible to as many people as possible, across the globe.

Below are explanations of Eastern Currents' different learning formats:

Live Seminar
Live Streaming Webinar
Live Webinar
Recorded Webinar

Live Seminars

Live seminars are events that are held live, in person, at a specific venue. Attendees who register, will physically be present at the venue to attend and participate in the seminar. During the event, there will be demonstrations and/or practical training, for hands-on learning. Attendees are able to get direct feedback from the instructor on techniques practiced, or ask personalized questions to the instructor both during and after the class. Continuing Education credits are issued based on attendance, and require attendees to physically sign the sign-in/out sheet at the start and end of the class.

Live Seminars are great for people who:

  • Prefer to learn in hands-on, live-in person settings.
  • Want a direct line of communication between themselves and the instructor.
  • Want to interact and connect with colleagues and other members of the TCM community.

Live Streaming Webinar

Live Streaming is like attending a live seminar, but instead of being there physically in person, you are watching and participating via your computer. For example, the seminar takes place, with a speaker and attendees all at a specific venue, but Eastern Currents films and streams the seminar directly to a webroom on the Internet, where you are able to log in and "attend" from wherever you are with your computer.

There is a degree of interaction with live streaming. Registrants who are logged into the web-room can ask questions, and a moderator will be present to answer them in real time, or will pose questions to the speaker to have him/her answer them. If videos are played during the actual seminar, these videos will also be played in the webroom and played in realtime with clear audio and video for participants to view.

If the course is offering CEUs, the registrant must remain logged into the webroom for the entire duration of the webinar to receive full credit. CEUs are based on attendance, so it is important to note that the user must ensure they have the best possible internet connection, and review our technical guidelines prior to watching his/her first webinar to make sure s/he can stay logged in during the entire course – click here for more information on our technical guidelines. Live streaming attendees must also complete a Program Evaluation in order to get their CEUs, before a certificate can be issued.

Registrants will also receive access to the raw recording of the footage for 1 month access only;  this recording(s) is generally made available 2-3 days after the live streaming broadcast. This recording is for review purposes only. For example, if a person registers for the live streaming seminar, but does not enter the webroom to attend the webinar during the times of the event on the actual date, they will not be able to receive CEs, as live streaming course CEs are based on attendance and completion of a Course Evaluation.

Live Streamed Seminars are great for people who:

  • Wish to experience the event in real-time, interact with a moderator or speaker to have their questions answered, but are unable to travel to attend the event live and in person.
  • Like to review the information again, on their own time, as raw recordings are posted to review for 1 month only following the original streaming airdate..

Live Streamed Webinars are NOT the best option for people who:

  • Cannot be present in the webroom throughout the entire streaming seminar, as attendance and CEUs are recorded based attendance in the webroom;  CEUs are not issued for reviewing the raw recording that is posted into your account to review.
  • Do not meet the technical requirements to have a successful webinar experience - learn more about these requirements here.

Live Webinar

Live Webinars are similar to live streaming, except there is no live event with attendees. Instead, the speaker conducts the course via the Internet, directly from his/her computer and web camera. The presentation is transmitted live, into a webroom where registrants will log in to watch in real time as the speaker presents. Registrants who are logged into the webroom are able to ask questions and have a direct typed-dialogue with the instructor or moderator.

Just like for live streamed seminars, live webinar attendees must also complete a Program Evaluation in order to get their CEUs, before a certificate can be issued.

Live Webinars are a great option for people who:

  • Wish to experience the event in real-time, and have the ability to interact with a moderator to have their questions directly answered.
  • Like to review course information after the live webinar. Raw recordings of the webinar are often provided 2-3 days after the webinar's original broadcast, and are made available to review until your course access expires (4 months from the date of your course purchase). These recordings are for review purposes only, and cannot be used to earn CEUs.

Live Webinars are NOT the best option for people who:

  • Cannot participate in the live webinar at the time the live webinar is taking place. The raw recording, that is provided for review purposes after the event, cannot be used for CEU purposes in the event the registrant missed the live webinar.
  • Do not meet the technical requirements to have a successful webinar experience - learn more about these requirements here.

Recorded Webinar

Recorded webinars offer the most flexibility for learning. These webinars have been pre-recorded at a previous time, and have been edited for optimal viewing. Recorded webinars can be purchased and watched from anywhere in the world, at any time within the access period*.

With recorded webinars, you may pause, stop, rewind, and play the webinar at your leisure. Once you have completed watching the webinar you may complete a quiz, program evaluation, (and program worksheet, if applicable); the general passing grade for most quizzes is 70%, so upon successful completion of all the required CE materials and passing the quiz, your certificate can be automatically downloaded.**

Recorded Webinars are a great option for people who:
  • Are very busy, and can't commit to attending a live event, and would prefer to do a course on their own time.
  • Don't need any live interaction between themselves and the speaker. Since the course is pre-recorded, there are no direct lines of communication for you to ask questions or provide feedback direct to the speaker, as there is with live events.

Recorded Webinars are NOT the best option for people who:

  • Can't complete the course within one year. The majority of our purchased recorded webinars expire one year from the purchase date, so it is important that you watch and complete all quizes and course materials prior to the expiration date to ensure you receive your CEUs. Note: we have a few courses that require completion within 6 months. Please take careful note of the access period when purchasing your course, as all components must be completed within the time frame given. Thank you!

*A Note About Access Periods for Online Content

If you have purchased a recorded webinar, you will have immediate access to the webinar for one year*. After one year, your webinar will expire, and you will be unable to view the recording. You must ensure that if the webinar is CE/PDA approved, that you complete the course work and configure your certificate within this one-year frame* – you will not be able to download your certificate after the course expires.

For live webinars and live streaming events, a recording of what you watched in the webroom will be made available to you approximately 2-4 weeks after the event. This recording is for review purposes only, and cannot be used to complete your CE/PDA certification. You will have access to this recording for the rest of the duration that your course is active (your course expires one year from date of purchase).

*Note: we have a few recorded courses that require completion within 6 months. Please take careful note of the access period when purchasing your recorded course, as all components must be completed within the time frame given. Thank you!

**A Note About Certificates

In order for Eastern Currents to issue Continuing Education credits for Live Seminars, we need to have proof of attendance at the event. This is achieved by having attendees sign in and out of live events at the door. In the case of live online events, your attendance is tracked when you log in/out of the webroom. CEs for recorded webinars are based on the ability to complete and pass the quiz at the end of the course, along with the program evaluation and program worksheet (as required).

This form of tracking is to ensure that Eastern Currents Learning remains a viable, CE accredited institution in the event that we are audited by the CE governing bodies. If you forget to sign in or out at live events, it is very important that you contact us immediately after the event so that we can ensure that you receive the correct CEUs/PDAs earned. If you have difficulty logging in and out of the webrooms during a live streaming or webinar event, be sure to contact our moderator immediately during the webinar, and if the issues persist, be sure to contact EC within a few days of the event to confirm attendance to ensure you receive the correct CEUs/PDAs for the event.
