Course Overview
Migraine patients are often some of the most complex and frustrated individuals seen in clinical practice. Many continue to suffer despite medications, normal imaging, and years of treatment because the underlying inflammatory, hormonal, metabolic, and neurologic drivers of migraine are frequently overlooked. This course will help acupuncturists better understand why migraine patients develop chronic, treatment-resistant patterns, and how to identify the physiologic factors lowering a patient’s migraine threshold.
Participants will gain practical clinical insight into how diet, histamine sensitivity, hormones, autonomic dysfunction, mitochondrial stress, neuroinflammation, and environmental exposures contribute to migraine susceptibility and chronicity. Topics include anti-inflammatory and gluten-free diets, caffeine, ketones, essential fatty acids, vitamin deficiencies, Estrogen dominance, luteal phase hormone withdrawal, prostaglandins, endometriosis, xenoestrogens, Estrogen detoxification, and emerging research on DIM and hormone metabolism.
By the end of this section, clinicians will be better equipped to recognize complex migraine patterns, ask more meaningful clinical questions, communicate more effectively with patients, and integrate evidence-informed nutritional, hormonal, and lifestyle considerations into individualized acupuncture treatment strategies.
Objectives
-
Learn how dietary factors — such as inflammatory foods, glyphosate, and caffeine use — contribute to migraine susceptibility and chronicity, and how to address these factors clinically.
-
Learn about histamine sensitivity, and how to guide patients toward low-histamine diets.
-
Learn how hormonal factors contribute to migraine susceptibility and chronicity, and how to address these factors clinically.
-
Understand overlapping pathophysiology between endometriosis and migraine, and how to be the best advocate for your patients.
-
Learn the 3 types of Estrogen dominance and how the gut microbiome plays a role in Estrogen detox.
Outline
0 hrs - 1.5 hrs
Dietary factors are examined including histamine sensitivity, anti-inflammatory diets, vitamins, EFAs, and caffeine use.
1.5 hrs - 2.5 hrs
Topics include Estrogen dominance, Estrogen detoxification (liver and gut processes), hormonal fluctuations, menstrual migraine, and perimenopause. Hormone imbalances in men are also covered.
2.5 hrs - 3 hrs
The association between migraines and endometriosis is explored in detail.
